Motorola Mobility beats Q3 estimates; Android phone sales remain strong, tablet sales weaken
Motorola on Thursday reported third-quarter earnings that beat analyst estimates thanks to strong sales of the company’s Android-powered smartphones. Motorola doubled Wall Street’s EPS estimate of $0.06, reporting earnings of $0.12 per share in the September quarter. The company earned $0.13 per share in the third quarter last year. Revenue of $3.3 billion was up 11% from the third quarter last year, but it narrowly missed analysts’ expectation of $3.4 billion. Revenue from device sales last quarter totaled $2.4 billion, up 20% year-over-year. The vendor shipped 11.6 million devices including 4.8 million smartphones and just 100,000 XOOM tablets, and operating losses totaled $32 million compared to $34 million in the same quarter last year.
